Christmas Sachet Gift-Guide

for the Whole Family

This fun project can be done by anyone from children to the most experienced crafter. If you like to sew, find a festive cloth of your liking, cut out 2 rectangular shapes (approximately 3” x 5”). Place wrong sides of fabric together (so print is facing print) and sew 1/4” seam along 3 of the 4 sides.Hold off finishing that fourth side until after you fill the sachet. If you don’t have the time or experience to sew, not to worry because bought sachets or small muslin bags from the craft or dollar store also work well. However you decide to achieve the muslin bags, this DIY gift is one that anyone will enjoy and is so customizable that you can make several varieties for a number of people on your gifting Christmas list!

Traditionally aromatic sachets were Muslin bags filled with organic dried herbs to keep the moths away, to enhance health, or just for the smell of it. Today, we use herbal and aromatic sachets to freshen and scent specific areas like drawers, closets and cars. We can still use these wonderful little natural sacs to enhance health! Sachets can be used as compresses, as sleep aids and as natural air deodorizers using the correct blend of fillers!

A great way to design your sachet “filling” is to use rice alone or along with dried herbs or flowers (such as lavender). The dried lavender buds along with the culinary herbs have a potent fragrance at first. Rice tends to hold the fragrance of the herbs and essential oils in the sachet well. Once the aroma begins to fade, it is easy to revive the scent by squeezing and pressing the sachet. Alternately, you can add a few more drops of the essential oils synergy to the sachet and let sit for 24 hours before applying directly to skin. This will ensure that the oils are absorbed into the sachet filler or have dissipated into the air and will not come into direct contact with your skin. You can choose to add essential oils – or not – it’s up to you, but the therapeutic benefits that the essential oils will offer your gift recipient are tremendous!

Using dried herbs right from your pantry or local grocery store is a great way to incorporate herbs and spices in your sachet. The smell of dried oregano, rosemary, sage and thyme is delicious. You can also use the warming spices of crushed cinnamon sticks, fresh whole cloves, whole nutmeg, black peppercorns and cardamom pods. You can even add some dehydrated fruit like orange slices or cranberries to your sachets for a cheery scent. The beauty of this project is that you can really personalize this gift for anyone on your list by mixing and matching herbs, spices, and plant material with essential oils – whatever appeals to you and will bring benefit and joy to your loved one! You can always spruce up (pun intended!) your sachet with an appropriate therapeutic essential oil synergy for a more vibrant fragrance with a greater therapeutic value.

This creative and easy-to-make holiday gift is one with endless possibilities to explore!

An easy sachet to support physical health would include items such as rice, lavender flowers and perhaps an essential oil synergy to relieve muscle tension with one or more essential oils like Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulous), Cajeput (Melaleuca cajuputi), Camphor (Cinnamomum camphora), Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis), Juniper Berry (Juniperus communis) and Yarrow (Achillea millefolium)! This can be heated in the microwave in short bursts and used as a compress to help the hurt!

For an aging grandparent, an essential oil blend containing 2 drops Lemon (Citrus limon) essential oil, 1 drop Thyme (Thymus vulgaris) essential oil, 6 drops Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) essential oil and 1 drop Ylang Ylang (Cananga odorata) essential oil! This is an evidence based blend that supports memory, mental awareness and emotional wellness and is a superior blend for the senior in your life! Add rice, lavender flowers and rosemary herb to the sachet and you are done! You may even want to make them a second sachet for under their pillow to support good sleep which is generally a challenge for seniors! In the second sachet, blend 2 drops Orange (Citrus sinensis) essential oil, 1 drop Thyme (Thymus vulgaris) essential oil, 6 drops Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) essential oil and 1 drop Ylang Ylang (Cananga odorata)essential oil with rice, lavender flowers and chamomile flowers!

To kill airborne viruses this Christmas season, create a sachet filled with rice, lavender flowers and 2 drops Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus radiata) essential oil, 2 drops Niaouli (Melaleuca viridiflora) essential oil, 2 drops Ravensara (Ravensara aromatica) essential oil, 2 drops Star Anise (Illicium verum)essential oil and 2 drops Clove Bud (Syzygium aromaticum) essential oil. Leave a sachet in the common areas of your home and in the restrooms and bedrooms for greatest efficacy! This blend is also amazing in a diffuser with 5 drops being added to 150ml of water in an ultrasonic diffuser!

One of my favourite Christmas sachet blends is the 1 drop Clove Bud (Syzygium aromaticum), 2 drops Nutmeg (Myristica fragrans), 2 drops Ginger (Zingiber officinale), 2 drops Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum) and 3 drops Sweet Orange (Citrus sinensis) - not just for each essential oils therapeutic properties, but for the overall Christmasy scent that pervades the house when I leave one lying about!

Scent your Christmas tree naturally with a sachet tree ornament and enhance the Christmas spirit in your home with the aroma of a natural Christmas tree! Use dried ground balsam fir needles, rice, 6 drops of Siberian Fir (Abies sibirica), 2 drops of Juniper Berry (Juniperus communis) and 2 drops of Cinnamon Bark (Cinnamomum verum) essential oils! Hang in your tree and enjoy throughout the Christmas season!
